DAY 1.- CUSCO | KM 104 | WIÑAYWAYNA | INTI PUNKU | MACHU PICCHU | AGUAS CALIENTES.
At 5:00 a.m. We collect you early in the morning for our private transfer to Ollantaytambo train station (2 hours outside Cusco). We board our train which takes us through the picturesque landscapes leading to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. We disembark at Km104 and begin our walk by crossing the Vilcanota / Urubamba River where we enter the Sacred Inca trail (Make sure you have your passports and ISIC cards). We climb away from the river, first visiting the Inca ruins of Chachabamba and then entering a shaded forest.
On emerging from the forest we continue with a long walk in open, sun-scorched grasslands before returning to the protection of some shaded forests where we visit a beautiful waterfall. After another hard ascent we reach Wiñaywayna which is a beautiful ceremonial site divided into two sectors and fashioned from finely-carved stones fitted together with great precision. He we will have time to rest, explore and have lunch. We now enter the cloud forest where the Amazon meets the Andes, passing through luxuriant vegetation and home to hundreds of bird and orchid species making our way to the Sun Gate "Inti Punku" where we'll get our first views of Machu Picchu. Here, the final stretch of the royal Inca highway will take us to the citadel itself, covered for four centuries by forest and now laid out for our appreciation. From the Sanctuary, we will take the bus to the town of Machu Picchu with time to relax and maybe pass some time in the warm thermal baths of Machu Picchu town. Here we spend the night at our hotel. It is recommended that you start the trek with at least 2 litres of water.
